C. Everett “Chick” Koop was born in Brooklyn, NY, on October 14, 1916. He was an only child, and grew up surrounded by close-knit extended family. He expressed interest in medicine at an early age, and as a teenager he would sneak into the viewing gallery in the operating theaters at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons. Koop was known for his work to prevent tobacco use, AIDS, and abortion, and for his support of the rights of disabled children.
